But we’re in high spirits with a good recovery, and we hope this speech—the very first GCBC event—on the inimitable JRR Tolkien is worth the wait! Join us for an insightful and heartfelt speech by Sadie Woodley, JD MA Catholic Studies, on the Life, Works, and Faith of JRR Tolkien. In this engaging talk, Sadie delves into Tolkien's profound impact on literature and explores how his Catholic faith subtly yet powerfully influenced his timeless stories. Sadie, who fell in love with Tolkien's works while attending Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, brings a unique perspective to this discussion. Her passion for Tolkien is evident as she shares personal reflections and insights gained from her esteemed professors during her Tolkien coursework. Tolkien’s stories are full of hope, love, courage, and a deep empathy for the human condition. His characters exemplify the fullness of our potential for greatness, and his works are a testament to the triumph of goodness over evil. Whenever Sadie seeks to nourish her affection for mankind and reaffirm the certainty of goodness, she turns to Tolkien’s masterpiece, "The Lord of the Rings." The Great Catholic Book Club is honored to have launched our ministry with this exploration of Tolkien’s incredible life and works. This speech is particularly special as it was presented in the basement of St. Mary’s in Iowa City, a place filled with wonderful memories of rehearsals and fellowship with the best choir in town.
